Motorhoming Around the Mediterranean: The Best of Everything
Exploring the Mediterranean by motorhome offers the ultimate combination of climate, swimming, and freedom. This article focuses on an epic motorhome journey deep into Spain – 1,980 miles (3,190 km) from Gothenburg.
A Hidden Gem: Los Alcázares
Around 485 miles (780 km) into Spain, you’ll find the charming town of Los Alcázares, located 50 miles (80 km) south of Alicante. Situated in the province of Murcia, southeastern Spain, Los Alcázares is home to approximately 16,000 residents. With an average annual temperature of 19°C (66°F) and about 310 sunny days each year, it’s a paradise for sun-seekers.
The journey from the Spanish border is a scenic delight, with the climate transitioning from southern France’s familiar temperate conditions to the African-inspired warmth of Spain’s southern coast. While Los Alcázares is a coastal town, it isn’t directly on the Mediterranean. Instead, it sits beside the Mar Menor, a vast lagoon connected to the Mediterranean Sea. For a Mediterranean dip, it’s just a 10-minute drive north or a 35-minute drive south of Mar Menor.
A Campsite in Paradise
The first area of Los Alcázares you’ll encounter is Lo Narejos, home to the delightful **Area Narejos** campsite. The site offers spacious pitches and all the facilities you’ll need, just 200 metres from the beach. Within the grounds, you’ll find a charming restaurant aptly named *Marea*. Its terrace is thoughtfully shaded and perfect for relaxing.
There are nearby playgrounds for children and the town centre is just a couple of kilometres away. In addition to *Marea*, a variety of restaurants, shops, cafés, and bars are within a few minutes’ walk. For those keen to explore, bicycles can be hired, allowing you to visit nearby attractions, beaches, or the town itself while burning off a few calories.
Facilities include electric hook-ups, Wi-Fi, and a service area with rubbish disposal and potable water. The campsite also has a laundry room with washing machines and dryers, as well as modern toilet and shower facilities with hot water. Pets are welcome, and there’s even a designated dog toilet area.
Things to Consider "On the Way"
When travelling through France in a motorhome, it’s essential to note the regulations introduced in early 2021. Motorhomes exceeding 3.5 tonnes must display warning signs alerting other road users to their blind spots. Failing to comply could result in hefty fines of up to €750.
The motorhome must have three warning decals placed according to legal specifications. This rule applies to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, including buses and lorries. For those who prefer not to display these decals permanently, there’s a convenient solution:
Easy Dot removable decals. These can be attached to metal, plastic, or aluminium surfaces and removed as needed.
Decals can be ordered from: https://anglesmorts.online
